Dr. Krapf began studying the Kisuahili and Kinika languages in May 1844 after arriving in Mombas “by the means of the colloquial Arabic which I had learned in Egypt, Arabia, and Abyasinia.”[1] By 1845, Krapf had compiled an extensive vocabulary list, grammar outlines, and translations of the Gospels of St. Luke and St. John, which he sent off to London to help new missionaries coming to East Africa.
